This week on May 31, 1859, Big Ben in Ye Old England rang it’s bells for the first time!

Back in the 1850’s, it was Royal Astronomer Sir George Airy who asked for assistance from Edmund Beckett Denison, whose experise in horology helped them design the clock that would be Big Ben.

Over a century later, with only one crack in the original bell (which is still in use today), the use of coins on the pendulum for Big Ben is still practiced today to help Big Ben keep impeccable time!
